Making Your Home a Cozy Haven in the Fall

There are so many things to enjoy about fall and one of my favorites has to be creating a cozy atmosphere for my loved ones.

This is not something we do out of obligation but out of love from our hearts. We want to make our homes a safe haven and a place or rest and peace from the world to bless our families and help them to refresh, recharge and rejuvenate.

Here are a few ideas to help implement this in your home:

A peaceful spirit & prayer -  It is a pleasure to come home to a peaceful woman who has been praying over her home and ready to bless others. With Christ as center of our homes this is possible. Let us always remember to fill our homes with an abundance of His love that will overflow to others in our home.

Soft music - Isn't it wonderful that calm and soft music has a relaxing effect on ourselves and our children? I like playing relaxing music with no lyrics while my children are doing school and it helps them to focus better. It also calms me too! I love the quietness it brings to my home at any time of the day that I choose to put it on. It is especially relaxing at dinner.

Soft glow - Turn on the fireplace and enjoying the crackling embers (if you don't have one you can play one on your TV through Youtube). We also have white lights in trees and fall garlands that we light up for a cozy ambiance. I love, love, love this fall tree with lights pictured below:

Candles - I know that some of you love getting the fall scents at Yankee Candle or Bath & Bodyworks.  They come in pumpkin, cinnamon, apple and more. If you have small children you might use flameless candles (I love this scented set below that is operated by a remote) or place small battery operated tealites around your home.

Warm decor - change out your summer decor and put out your fall decor! Set out warm colored tones (like swap out a white pillow with a burgundy or fall themed pillow) and make sure you clear up any clutter so things are nice and clutter free. Don't forget to replace your summer flowers with mums. If you have a front porch you can decorate it to be more welcoming with pumpkins, more mums, haybales, scarecrows, and dried cornstalks.

Bring the outdoors in - go on a walk with your children and gather pinecones, acorns, crabapples, pine tree branches, and red berries to display on a table or in a bowl when you come home.

Snuggling - when I think of fall I think of books and throws to snuggle up in.  So be sure to pull out your fall throws for the season or grab a or blanket, pop some popcorn and watch a favorite movie. Here is a great list of fall books for small children if you need some inspiration. If your children like to read alone here is a list of wholesome books for boys and girls.

Scents - You can also make your home smell amazing using this easy fall potpourri or this essential oil recipe in your diffuser.

Hot & hearty food - whether you love baking cookies, cinnamon rolls or pies, or maybe making hot soups or casseroles--food is always a welcoming sight on a table after a long day.

You can find some great fall recipes that are also healthy out there, I am looking forward to trying some fall recipes in my new cookbook, Trim Healthy Table.

Warm drinks - Pull out the mugs! Hot cocoa, coffee, and tea helps to warm the heart and soul so be sure to have some on hand and don't forget the marshmallows.

Traditions - spend some time planning out some fall traditions you can do to make memories with your family. Have a family meeting and share ideas or use this fun filled list here.

Family games - sometimes it's just fun to get back to the basics in a world full of technology that can be distracting. Turn off the tablets and enjoy a quiet night of playing board games or cards or-- if you want to get a little loud and go crazy you can have fun doing some fall minute-to-win-it games!

What would *you* add to the list?

How to Find a Titus 2 Mentor

"Can someone help me find a Titus 2 Mentor? I have been all alone with no encouragement or friends and could really use someone to talk to and help me in my marriage and raising my children."

This is one of the questions I have heard constantly over the years in the Christian community and one that has not gone away. Even though we have more technology than ever before there is still a need to connect with a living, breathing, loving, caring, wise Christian woman in person!

I want to encourage all the ladies out there and remind them that the best place to learn about about being a godly woman is through the Bible first--it should always be our first stop when we are looking for guidance. A Titus 2 woman in the Bible is described as:

  • reverent in behavior
  • not slanderers or slaves to wine
  • teaching what is good
  • training young women to love their husbands
  • training young women to love their children

And to be self controlled, pure, busy at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands so that the word of God is not reviled.

One important thing before we begin--we must remember is that having the Lord is enough. Sometimes we become discontent and "think" we need more than Him and that having a Titus 2 mentor will change everything. We need to remember while these women might be a blessing they can never take the place of the our Lord. He is first and all that we need!

With that said--some of you are blessed in that there are already Titus 2 women around you. When I was a young Christian there were many women in my family and at church who had amazing gifts in serving, hospitality, evangelism, and more. So I learned from them and quietly gleaned what I could when I was around them.

But not everyone has that luxury so I am sharing a few ways today to get connected with a real breathing godly woman to encourage you:

1. Pray & ask God to show you the right person - This is so important--we need His guidance in everything and He knows the right person to direct us too. Don't try to rush the matter but take your time. Maybe God has already directed you to someone.

2. Find out what is available at church - many times there are programs designed to mentor others. The church I went to had discipleship classes and that is where I met my first real mentor. She was an amazing godly woman who I know the Lord guided me to.

3. Talk to your pastor or pastor's wife - if your church doesn't have programs in place try talking to your pastor or pastor's wife. They might know someone who would be the perfect match or she might even take you under her wing herself.

4. Ask a person directly - One year I remember asking an older godly woman to hold me accountable in my spiritual life. I asked her after watching her life for about a year. She said yes and it was a great blessing to me. I am so glad I did not shy away from asking her or I would missed the blessing of her in my life.

5. Get involved - sometimes being a part of a Bible study,  service event,  or church fellowship will help surround you with Titus 2 woman that you may not have considered. This is a great time to meet them, get to know them better and learn about their lives.

Now, the reality is that sometimes these tips might not work and you STILL can't find someone.

Yes, I know it can be that hard.

When there is no one around don't despair, I went through the same thing for a season and this is what God showed me when I felt alone.

God showed me how to rely on Him solely.

It is also okay to be encouraged by godly Christian women in books or blogs that you find encouraging. There is nothing wrong with that and can be a great blessing! Just make sure that what you are being taught lines up with the Bible. There are many false teachers out there and false information so do your homework.

As a side note, earlier this year we started a Wise Woman Builds Titus 2 Facebook Group as a place for women to connect with each other and build each other up in the areas of marriage, parenting, and homemaking. We also ask each other questions and receive support and prayer. It has been such a blessing and we warmly welcome you to come and join us!

Now on the other hand, if you are an older woman reading this article and know that there is a great need for Titus 2 women then you might be interested in my post How to Become a Titus 2 Woman.

My prayer for you today is that you would be connected to godly women who would encourage, support, teach, and lovingly guide you in all His ways.

How did *you* find a Titus 2 mentor?

NEW: The Lifegiving Table Book & October Bookset Giveaway!

Look what came in the mail yesterday:

It was just released a few days ago and it looks sooooo good!

I am choosing to read this book for October--I am already looking forward to snuggling up under a blanket, lighting a candle and digging in.

Because there is nothing better in the fall time than to make a hot cup of cocoa, watch the leaves fall, and bury yourself into a good book!

In case you aren't familiar with Sally Clarkson, she is a popular author and is known for her encouraging Christian books on motherhood and homeschooling.

Here is the description of this newest book in case you haven't heard of it:

Make your table a place where your family and friends long to be—where they will find rest, renewal, and a welcome full of love.

Beloved author Sally Clarkson (The Lifegiving Home, Own Your Life, Desperate) believes that meals lovingly served at home—and the time spent gathered together around the table—are a much-needed way to connect more deeply with our families and open our kids’ hearts. Food and faith, mingled in everyday life, become the combination for passing on God’s love to each person who breaks bread with us.

In The Lifegiving Table, Sally shares her own family stories, favorite recipes, and practical ideas to help you get closer to the people you love . . . and grow in faith together.

Here is a peek of the video:

She also has a companion guide to go with it, this seems like it would be fun to do as a group or study.

As part of our Focus on Fall Series, we are choosing this lovely book set for one of our special readers as our October Fall Giveaway!
