The Read-Aloud Family Book

I've have shared several posts with you in the pasts about how my kids love Poetry Tea Time. It is a fun time for us all to get together, make memories around books, poems and good literature, and have some fun treats!

We also have fun and add another dimension to it like doing our Art Brain Box, playing games, sketching, making up skits, and we always end up with a house full of laughter. I love days like that because I love bringing the sunshine into our school and the kids enjoy their time with one another.

I wanted to share about a brand new book that is out from Sarah MacKenzie (you might remember her from her other homeschooling book that we shared about in the past called Teaching From Rest. You can read that post here) and it is called The Read Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids.

I have been wanting to write about this book for awhile and so glad to finally share it here. This is a great book to get you motivated about homeschooling and reading good books to your children and they why and how behind it all. Here is a quote from the book:

This book is not just for the new homeschooler but it is for the veteran too. I have been homeschooling for 20 years and this book has plenty to offer! I love that she shares book recommendations at for different age categories and what she did when her children became teenagers. Which really helps a mom to save a lot of time.

Here area few of her recommendations for the ages of 8-12:

Little House in the Big Woods
A Poem for Peter
The Bark of the Bog Owl
Cilla Lee Jenkins: Future Author Extraordinaire
Esperanza Rising
The Family Under the Bridge
The Green Ember
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Here is another important quote from the book worth pondering:

We really do need to be careful about that. I have loved reading since I was a kid. I remember long trips to the library with my dad and leaving with a stack of books so high that I could barely carry them. I want that type of love of reading for my children and want to feed the flame of the fire of learning into their lives.

(These were some muffins that Joshua made for Poetry Tea Time--
I'm telling you, my kids really look forward to this time in our homeschool day.)

Yes, yes, yes--I love that she included this from C.S. Lewis in the book. As a mother of five boys I can state for a fact that whenever there are knights included that they will be heavily engrossed in the book until they reach the end!

Here is a quick peek of the table of contents:

In a later post I will share some more of her book recommendations as well as some of mine!

(A quick important mom tip--homemade chocolate chips cookies
always help make reading time more delicious, for both you and your students!)
